WRINGING BLOOD FROM A STONE
WHY I CAN’T HOLD YOUR HAND RIGHT NOW
Solar Noon is pleased to present WHY I CAN’T HOLD YOUR HAND RIGHT NOW, a solo exhibition of new works by Portland-based artist Taryn Tomasello.
From the artist:
Walk through a warehouse. Inside a Room 17 x 18ft. White Walls. One Window. Painted Wooden Floors. Invited Bewilderment.
The Conditions: Something that might or might not happen.
An event that depends on a condition that is uncertain or incidental. Plan B, a plan devised for an outcome other than in the usual (expected). These are all backup plans or measures to address potential problems or unforeseen circumstances. Contingency is the feature of a statement making it neither necessary nor impossible.
You asked me what I thought.
a) I thought I knew what I wanted to tell you. I thought I understood.
b) I knew I didn’t understand anything. I knew that it would take years for me to understand why I did what I did.
c) I wonder if anyone mapped the Fall Zones.
Materials Used:
Chrome plated steel
Unfired clay
Food safe vinyl tubing
Neodymium glass
Cotton rag paper
Archival inkjet print
Wooden frame
Latex paint
80 proof vodka
Lions mane mushroom
Skullcap
Milky oat tops
Victory brown wax
Taryn Tomasello is an artist living and working in Portland, OR whose work rests at the intersection of text, event, image, material and objects. She is concerned with witnessing and latency. Through collecting and handling forms and ideas, Tomasello's work functions as a critique of our history and our present, attempting to make sense of irreconcilable futures. Although research is an integral part of Tomasello’s practice, she maintains a deep affinity with the uninvited and unexpected, often working spontaneously in response to a site or situation.
Tomasello has shown her work in art spaces across the US and internationally as well as being included in publications both online and in print. However, her best work often exists outside the confines of traditional gallery settings and beyond the reach of conventional documentation strategies. Tomasello holds an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of Arts at Bard College and a BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art.
